Beech Box 01

Demonstrating the benefits of British beech within furniture design, the Beech Boxes are the root of a new storage system, utilising spindle-moulded rails to allow the use of smaller and lower grade timber, they extend from stool and side table, to entire walls of shelving.

The UK has a history of mismanaging our woodlands, leading to inefficient and unsustainable timber sourcing. As the second largest importer of wood, we should be designing from forest to front room, considering the behind the scenes environmental implications of our designs. By creating a demand for furniture made from British wood, we can encourage a market for British timber suppliers, improving foresty management, and sustainable timber practices.

Beech Box 01 is a stacking sidetable/stool, which extends into shelving. It aims to highlight the benefits of utilising British beech within the furniture industry. Though traditionally ‘unseen,’ used for internal joinery, its’ material properties have great potential.

The British beech trees coming into maturity have been unmanaged, which leads to unpredictable timber. Through the spindle-moulding manufacturing process, Beech Box 01 can be produced from smaller, lower grade, sections of timber.

Beech Box 01 is a part of a larger speculative system, it has the opportunity to grow. Hopefully, it will help the British beech forests grow too.
